Sacred Works I: The Emerald Tablet Available on Bandcamp

The first album from Cult of Orpheus, described as “fervently beautiful” by Willamette Week, is now available for download, and limited edition compact disc!

Sacred Works I: The Emerald Tablet includes the twelve-movement setting of The Emerald Tablet for vocal quartet and string quartet, three settings of early Buddhist verse for baritone and piano, four poems in the Sufi tradition for soprano, mezzo-soprano, flute, and harp, and two of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus for baritone, cello, and guitar.

On June 23 come celebrate our new album!

Our album release is almost here! Tickets are on sale now. You can also RSVP on our Facebook Event.

It has been a joyful journey watching our first album take shape. Our troupe singers have brought not only their vocal talents but also their emotions and artistic insights to rehearsals and sessions. The instrumentalists on the record are some of the best from the Portland indie classical scene. And with each run-through, the meaning of the words has deepened for us: the transformational power of spiritual alchemy, the sublime detachment of the Buddha’s teachings, the ecstatic love of Sufi Islam, and the transcendent symbolism of Rilke’s verse.

Please join us June 23, 2018, for the release of Sacred Works I: The Emerald Tablet, at the Taborspace Sanctuary (5441 SE Belmont St., Portland). Tickets are selling, reserve yours today!

“Safety Nets” – new Cult of Orpheus single

“Safety Nets” is the first single from the ongoing Cult of Orpheus original project Time-wise Animals.

The song displays Americana and folk influence but quickly goes on a through-composed adventure with guitar and cello lines intertwining around the vocals.

The text, an original sonnet, is a symbolic exploration of failed social safety nets, represented by different fabrics: cotton for traditional southern culture, nylon for consumer culture, and barbed wire for any social structures (from broken families to large-scale social arrangements) that harm to the most vulnerable.

The recording features Christopher Corbell on classical guitar and vocals and Sonja Myklebust on cello. It was recorded live in the studio in Portland, Oregon over the summer of 2016.

Original sheet music (in full score for voice, cello, and guitar) is available.

Corbell and Myklebust will perform a special single-release show at The Waypost, 3120 N. Williams Ave., Portland, on Wednesday Dec. 28 at 8 pm.

All Classical Portland NW Previews Interview
