Call for Singers

I’m looking to hire four singers for private workshop sing-through of the new one-act opera Viva’s Holiday.

Scheduling is flexible; this will be occasional work, typically in 1-to-2-hour sessions. A little preparation is expected but no memorization. (This project may also include opportunities for demo recording and private unstaged performance after final revisions to the score are complete).

The roles to be sung are:
Viva, a stripper – soprano (lyric preferred) – lead role
Dad, a minister – baritone – substantial role
Mom, a teacher – mezzo-soprano – minor role
Brother, a soldier – tenor (or high baritone) – minor role

About the opera

Viva’s Holiday is a collaboration with Portland author/entertainer Viva Las Vegas, based on material from her memoir Magic Gardens.

The one-act opera explores attitudes toward sex work and family dynamics that unfold as Viva visits her family home in Duluth, Minnesota for the holidays, after becoming a stripper in Portland.

Scored for four singers and chamber orchestra, the work runs just under 45 minutes and is sometimes playful, sometimes heart-wrenching. The score emphasizes lyrical expressiveness with a very approachable (tonal, motivic) musical palette that is at once eclectic and traditional, with nods to both classicism and musical theater.
